Today I crossed back to the Eastern daylight time zone and also rode about five miles in Michigan. The first 20 miles were mostly along major roads and fairly flat. The last 28 miles were in country areas with quieter roads and occasional very short steep hills. The weather was favorable. I had expected more wind as the forecasts included small craft advisories. It was humid but cooler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, in anticipation of wind, I modified my original plans to go eastward to South Bend instead of following the shore of Lake Michigan all around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not sure how RideWithGPS selects routes but in the 1st quarter mile I could see it could be interesting with the “no outlet” sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half a mile later, I learned why. The road stopped and there was a different road on the other side of the tracks. Time to lift my bike over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was still in Indiana Dunes National Park. Skies were overcast and cool. It was also humid and almost foggy so my shirt was also damp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon enough, I was on US 12 for the next 18+ miles. Not much of a shoulder but also not too much traffic. This brought me to and through Michigan City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short one mile stretch of trail. In the foggy background, a giant cooling tower. One coal and two natural gas plants for 680 megawatts of power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fresh baked Amish pies. Unfortunately not open yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 20 miles, the large turn for the route as I took 1000N heading directly east for 15 miles. In contrast to country roads I traveled further south in Indiana, there were more trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Backroads Bikeways. I saw multiple signs like this today. As best I can tell, a Michigan based set of routes mapped out. This particular sign was still in Indiana, but I was half a mile south of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I got close to the edge of the time zone, different devices started to get confused. As best I could tell, my cell phone picked the time zone from the cell tower so switched early. My GPS waited until the actual boundary to switch but kept flipping the sunset time to\/from Eastern and Central time zones. My fitness watch was paired with the cell phone and switched early as well. However the small sunrise\/sunset indicator stayed in Central Time until I updated it. Fixed soon enough but stretched out because I cycled for 15 miles on a road 1\/2 mile south of Indiana\/Michigan border and the time zone boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small church in Michigan. Just a little before this I had a dog run out barking. I stopped and kept my bike between myself and the dog and yelled a combination of “no” and “go home” but he was persistent. A driver came up with a pickup and helped distract the dog to get him back home. He might have been friendly but I didn’t want to check it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still in Michigan but trees in the distance are Indiana. The last few miles brought me to South Bend and my finish for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n
