Fort Thompson was the town before Pierre. This first stretch has ~1000 feet of climb, mostly in two hills. There is a large bridge here where Interstate 90 crosses the Missouri River. There are signs for Indian Health Services and tribal areas. Despite leaving late, I was already at the hotel by 11:30. My room wasn&#8217;t ready yet so I left my bicycle and went to look for lunch. The casino had a restaurant but unfortunately security would not let me enter with my camelback backpack so I found a mini mart for lunch.
