Fort Thompson, two hills
A short ride today. Fort Thompson was the town before Pierre. This first stretch has ~1000 feet of climb, mostly in two hills. Given the distance and hills, this seemed like a good stop over.
Leaving through the town of Chamberlain. There is a large bridge here where Interstate 90 crosses the Missouri River. The water is wide and there are small bluffs on each side.
Looking back after reaching the first climb. Missouri River in the background.
Looking down the hill headed back down the bluff.
Fort Thompson is on a reservation. There are signs for Indian Health Services and tribal areas. There is also a casino and motel.
At the turn off. This area is mostly open grass land and not much in the way of crops.
The casino. Despite leaving late, I was already at the hotel by 11:30. My room wasn’t ready yet so I left my bicycle and went to look for lunch. The casino had a restaurant but unfortunately security would not let me enter with my camelback backpack so I found a mini mart for lunch. Otherwise a quiet afternoon as I waited to check in.
