Fort Collins, familiar routes …
Today a ride from Cheyenne to Fort Collins. I have lived in Fort Collins for about fifteen years so these roads were all familiar riding.
I am staying with a friend Paul. Yesterday Paul already took my rear panniers so the riding today was easier. I also ended 1000ft lower than I started so that helped as well. It was ~50F starting and didn’t get hot.
Early morning leaving Cheyenne
Smooth and quiet road.
At six miles I got onto the shoulder of the interstate. Why? There are two direct routes in far northern Colorado. US 85 has 70 mph traffic and a two and a half foot shoulder. I-25 has 85 mph traffic and an eight foot shoulder. Not ideal but I picked the interstate and have done it before. It is noisy and there are shredded tires so not pleasant but it got me where I needed to go.
After three miles I was off briefly at Terry Ranch Road. From here to the CO/WY border is a paved frontage road. One can normally access Terry Ranch Road to this point without the interstate but there was a closure for road construction.
Grooved pavement and then smooth riding.
Pavement ends at the border. The fence keeping me from the interstate also ends, so I follow the path to the road.
Across the way is the welcome sign…
Made it! Now back on I-25.
Next exit. Pedestrians are disallowed but bicycles ok on this stretch. There was even a caution bicycles sign.
Finally done with interstate riding. At the next exit the next surprise. Fortunately I knew an alternative and took it instead.
More frontage road riding. I took a brief stop in Wellington before finishing my ride to Fort Collins.
I’ve owned this duplex for thirty years, so stopped be to see it still standing
Stopped by the bike shop and made arrangements to drop my bike for service on Monday
See those red spots? I’ve worn through the tread on the tire and that is the under layer starting to show… past time for a new tire…
Here I will take an intermission before continuing the ride. We have a Celebration of Life for my father on September 2nd and many friends family coming. So I’ll be with family during some of that time. Also, time to get a good tune on the bicycle. Once all is ready and done, I’ll resume the travels and the blog.
