North Platte
Tailwinds! Overall an easy ride today including a shift in wind. Yesterday afternoon it became hot and the forecast for today was over 100F so I was riding just before sunrise. As it turned out, I was done by noon and the temperature was 83F with some humidity. I expect it to warm again this afternoon.
The pattern for today was similar to yesterday – a flat ride following US 30 to the west. Alongside the railroad tracks, with 14 trains today.
North Platte is a town of 25k people but still feels quiet. Perhaps Sunday and heat keep people inside. I was also surprised today at how few cars were on US 30.
Brady was my halfway point today. These high temperatures are about 10-15F above normal for this time of year.
Overcast starting out.
One of 14 trains today.
Home of the Eagles and Jackson Lake. Population 408, but enough people in the surrounding area to have a high school with 93 students.
Even small towns have a pedestrian overpass and an automobile overpass crossing the rail lines.
Old style gas station
The biggest climbs today were over the railroad.
The Platte splits just before North Platte. The South Platte River continues west and then southwest towards Denver. The North Platte River continues west and then northwest via Scottsbluff.
Otherwise a straightforward ride today. I expect somewhat shorter rides the next two days – both because of weather and because of where motels are found.
