Huntington, against the wind
Today was a short but windy ride. As I expected the head winds were strong today, as strong as any I’ve had so far on my trip. I took off the brim to my helmet to keep it from being a sail on my head. It was only 36 miles so this was otherwise a good day to ride in the wind.
Yesterday was a quiet rest day. I was near a large Walmart and many restaurants so a good place to relax.
Leaving Ontario. Overcast skies and a warm 52F. I got the slightest hints of rain drops but not enough to put on a rain jacket.
Once I left Ontario, route 203 was a small road following the Snake River. There were a few irrigated farms and a few houses. The wind started to pick up.
Once US 95 split off, the road became much quieter
Snake River
RV parks and campgrounds
At the end of this, I had three miles of Interstate.
Road construction. Always a challenge. In this case half the left lane was blocked but the shoulder remained wide and free.
Exit coming up. There was a large truck stop where I had lunch and got out of the wind. From here the wind was a lot stronger
Now in the Pacific time zone. Sunrise is a little before 7am and sunset is around 6:30pm. The days get shorter by about two minutes each day
Farewell Bend State Park. After this was a 450ft climb over a hill to Huntington. It wasn’t very steep but the wind was strong enough that I walked most of the hill.
Reached the city limit
Google maps had listed these cabins so I called. But this wasn’t where I stayed…
Instead I stayed here in the old Catholic church. It has been nicely converted with a few bedrooms and living area and a nice place to spend the night. Glad to be here. Also happy to be out of the wind.
