Cascade Locks, back to a land with trees
Today was a shorter ride than yesterday, but more than twice as much climbing. There were several long climbs approaching 6% and one section of 10%. I had a mix of small roads, bike trails and even a five mile stretch of I-84.
My route brought me from an area too dry to have many trees to a much wetter area. There are steep hillsides along the gorge with a railroad on each side, interstate on this side, WA-14 on the other side. There are sections of “historic US 30”, some as road and some as trail.
Leaving The Dalles without many trees.
The first climb was nearly 600ft and wound back and forth.
Looking back the way I came.
Those specks are boats.
Grapes near Mosier
Apricots near Mosier
Large tourist boat on the gorge. I later saw in Cascade Locks where this started.
Mosier was the first small town.
Historic Route 30, a bike trail and a climb from Mosier
First tunnel
Twin tunnel. These were the original road but now restored as a bike path.
Now on to the interstate for a few miles.
Overview of the trail. There were more people out on the trail for a ride.
Afternoon trail riding
This last road was steep. I walked up part of it. I was passed by a number of bicycles, perhaps two thirds were e-bikes.
Cascade Locks at last. Looks like a touristy town. Motel doesn’t have check in until 4pm, so post this early.
I am now within a day cycling from Portland. It looks like the next few days will have a mix of showers and rain. Hopefully not too wet tomorrow.
