Portland, umbrella man…
Today a sometimes wet ride from Cascade Locks to the middle of Portland. I traveled on a mix of forest paths, historic US 30 and city streets. There was a reasonable amount of climbing particularly in the first half of the ride. It was also all familiar as I had lived in Portland between 2009 and 2012 and cycled these routes before.

The morning started with bike trails through the forest. These had some up and down riding and were quiet.

Oops, stairs. What you see and the same again off to the left. My bike was too heavy to wheel it once, so I unpacked two sets of luggage and made three trips.

This guy was renting bikes. Yesterday was good business and today less so. A little later it started to rain. Never very heavy but most of the rest of the ride.

Longest climb of the day was ~750 feet. Here is looking back at the gorge.

The second half was much more urban. I picked mostly city streets with bike lanes but a few short paths.

Portland has bicycle greenways. Bikes can travel through and cars only for short stretches. These were nice quiet and direct routes

Crossing the Hawthorne Bridge to downtown

See the top of the arched window above my bicycle? AMD offices were here on the mezzanine level. I looked out that window from my cubicle.

Made my way to Pioneer Square in middle of Portland. The Umbrella Man statue seemed appropriate as a photo to mark the location.
The next two days are forecast to be wet. I don’t have too many days before I need to travel back (and to work two weeks from today). So my thought is to take the train (no bike) to Salem and back tomorrow and if it is dry enough on Wednesday/Thursday to bike to Seattle where I’ll finish the trip.
